The Pronoun Icon

A set of design resources for people designing for pronouns

We use icons and symbols to represent a multitude of things in daily life and a lot of these find their way to digital products.

The Pronoun Icon is a symbol that is free-to-use and has been thoughfully designed to reflect today's modern standards and crafted to adapt to the flexibility of pronoun usage.

The concept combines three overlapping circles which represent the most commonly used pronouns They/Them, She/Her, and He/Him.

The overlapping space is segmented into pieces of varying sizes and represents the usage of neopronouns, such as Ze/Zir or Xe/Xem.

Due to the nature of its construction, this symbolism allows for wide representation as a standalone symbol, but is also flexible enough that visual variations can represent a single or combination of selected pronouns.

This project is currently work in progress and is subject to a little more reviewing and tweaking of the concept to ensure icons are available in a vast variety of weights and styles, but also meet accessibility criteria around contrast ratios and colour blindness.
